Sometimes those who live or work in a small space are told to think small in terms of scale and décor, especially when it comes to selecting and hanging art. However, we believe when it comes to art and décor, going big and bold in a small space could create that perfect look - and amazing impact - you have been dreaming about.
Here are some quick fire tips and tricks for decorating and hanging art in small spaces. We wanted to bust some myths and offer practical advice on how to enhance your space regardless of the size.
COLOUR
- If you paint the ceiling lighter than the walls, then this automatically makes the space seem airier and brighter.
- Try to include a statement piece of décor (lamp, statue) in black. This will ground the entire colour in the room.
- White is not the only way! Yes white reflects light but it is a common myth that it is the only way to make a space look bigger. Sharp and bright colours can also work brilliantly to expand a space.
- If you have a hallway or entrance space then paint it a darker colour than the rest of the space, so when you enter the other rooms they automatically feel brighter and more spacious by comparison.
ART
- A large frame may feel bulky and overbearing so think outside the frame (see what we did there) and experiment with alternatives such as bull clips, wires or large clipboards to hang art.
- Landscape art works better in smaller spaces as it draws the eye.
- Don’t just think images – A large mirror with an artistic frame will double as an artistic feature whilst reflecting and making space look larger.
- Run out of space to hang art? Why not add a painting in, on a bookshelf or maybe on a desk, or propped up on the floor.
- Just because it’s a small space doesn’t mean you have to think small, with art you can totally scale up and have a large piece that makes a statement and sets the tone for the rest of the room.
Décor
- Long narrow lines on floorboards work really well to lengthen the room even further. Avoid wide lines as this will make the space seem more closed in.
- Small space doesn’t mean you have to be minimal. Don’t feel that your personal touch and favourite things will make the space seem cluttered. Of course don’t overwhelm each surface, but minimal isn’t the cure to make the space bigger, it could just make it look empty.
- Don’t scale down furniture to accommodate the space, as small-scale furniture can have an off-putting effect and you don’t want it to look like a kids room. Instead choose a few wonderful full-size furniture pieces that will bring the space to life.
There are so many ways to be creative and expressive through art, and living in a smaller space shouldn’t be seen as a negative. Ultimately you will know what works in the space you have, and the most important rule everyone must follow when thinking about art and home décor in whatever space, is you must love it!
